The Snail Way

Dr. Tsultrim Kalsang, the Traditional Tibetan Medicine Doctor that I consulted in person in 2009 and later (he is mentioned in my self help book to be published in 2011), has this September promised to write a testimonial for my book in December this year. My first thought was: “Time is relative. Or at least perceived in a totally different way on the southern slopes of Himalayas, where dr. Kalsang works and lives as a Tibetan in India, accompanying His Holiness the Dalai Lama.” Actually even my life started to slow down after having given notice at my ex-job in 2008. I have the luxury to observe the people who strive for survival and hurry making business, for I have been a financially supported wife for 2 years now.

Since more and more people suffer from schizoaffective disorder, bipolar disorder or other mental illnesses partly also due to the hurrying stress atmosphere, and since more and more marriages break up, partly because there is not enough time to take care of relationships, I reckon we have reached the physiological speed limit. In my opinion we cannot work or live any faster. On the contrary – I believe we live in very interesting times, when we will be witness to all kinds of processes slowing down, including business. This seems pretty impossible, for at the time being we still choose to believe that “If you are not quick, you are ‘dead on the market’”. Nonetheless I have a very strong feeling that this belief is out of date and that those businesses that will find a way of functioning at a sedate pace, will be the survivors. Don’t ask me how this can be done, for I do not know that. I just feel this will be the case.

In the meantime all one can do is slow down in his or her spare time. There is a very simple exercise anyone can try. I came across it in Louise Hay’s book You Can Heal Your Life, I tried it myself and found it very useful. You can write down all your I-must-…-sentences on a piece of paper. For example: I must lose weight. I must pursue a creative hobby etc. Then you simply rephrase the sentences using another modal verb: I would like to lose weight. I would like to pursue a creative hobby etc. The I-would-like-to-mode puts much less pressure on you and gives you more space. Also if you find that your list of such sentences is very long and you are running out of time trying to do and be all those things in your spare time, you will find it easier to cross out a sentence or two beginning with “I would like to”. Of course you should not cross out ‘I would like to lose weight’, if your doctor told you to lose weight for example.

Let the image of a slowly moving snail be your inspiration in the slowing down process. Sooner or later we will all slow down, for the physiological speed limit cannot be exceeded. Those of us who are already forced into balancing bipolar moods actually have the privilege to slow down sooner than others.
